The Teleport Technologist is responsible for the provision of day to day operations and maintenance of the Winnipeg Teleport facility, ensuring preset serviceability numbers are met or exceeded

Main responsibilites

  •  
  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on networking hardware, such as routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Thorough understanding of complex data networks and backhaul configurations.
  • Troubleshooting of complex data networks.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance to IF and RF hardware such as up/down converters, klystron high power amplifiers (KHPA), traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTA), modulators and multiplexers.
  • Participate in the installation and commissioning of new and expansion services with engineering personnel, demonstrating thorough understanding of the systems.
  • Complete pertinent documentation associated with maintenance and/or installation tasks.
  • Complete customer required reports and maintenance documentation.
  • Responsible for the operations and maintenance of Power, HVAC, and supervisory and control systems.
  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on complex antenna systems and subsystems.
  • Provide TT&C support on multiple system configurations.
  • Have the ability to work directly with Telesat customers and/or third party contractors.
  • Provide on the job training to Field Service Representatives (FSR’s) and assist in remote troubleshooting as required.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.

Education and Experience

  • 3-year Electronics/Telecommunications Technologist Diploma, or the equivalent
  • Understanding of Network fundamentals such as TCP/IP and LAN/WAN
  • Familiarity with complex IP networks, routing protocols and VPN technology.
  • Familiar with various types of telecommunications test equipment
  • Ability to demonstrate solid troubleshooting skills and prioritize the resolution of events
  • Knowledge of Microsoft and Unix based operating systems, applications and tools.
  • Familiarity with Radio Frequency (RF) equipment and systems.
  • Strong mechanical skills due to the complexity of antenna maintenance routines and troubleshooting, and facility support equipment.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

Working Conditions

  • The Winnipeg Teleport operates Monday through Friday 0800-1600, with 24X7 on-call coverage and some shift work.  The ability to work in an unsupervised environment is a requirement of this position. There is also the potential for remote travel.  Must have a valid driver’s license.  CGP clearance required.
The successful candidate must be able to work in Canada and obtain clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP).
